Here are a few comments on this album from Steve Reid (Yesterday & Today Records Parramatta). Steve is a highly respected importer of Country Music CD's into Australia. Doug was the key member of the Flying Circus, a favourite late 60's/70's Australian pop group who combined Byrdsian tones with smatterings of evrything from folk to pop to bubblegum. This is his third album with Rob Breese and is another example of the local talent given leave of the constraints of the wide brown land'wattle. It is also a leap forward. Rob Breese has a very nice twang to his voice which is effective even n tracks which we may have heard before. "A Little Bluer Than That" is given a slightly slower interpretation than that of the song's write Irene Kelley or Alan Jackson and features a nice twangy guitar solo from Rob which is a feature of their live stage show. There are some excellent original songs as well which tend to reflect the influence of the Flying Burrito Bros on the pair, where as in general the covers are of a honky tonk variety, though perhaps a tad familiar in content overall.
This is the second joint effort from Doug & Rob and sets the pace for the future.
Tracks On This Album Include: 1. Mama Tried 2. Masquerade 3. Alabama Sam 4. I'm Drinking Canada Dry 5. Rodeo Man 6. Heart To Heart 7. I'm Still In Love With You 8. Banjo's Old Days 9. Here is what Deborah Minter thought of the Album when she reviewed it in CAPITAL NEWS. "The good ol' days of HANK and GEORGE are alive and well with this great debut album from CAMERON MASON. Just like the rich multi layered sounds that came out of Nashville in the sixties and seventies, Tamworth producer ROB BREESE has recreated a multifaceted album that makes the most of Cameron's writing style and vocal qualities. Cameron's own tracks like Born to Lie, Just like a Nursery Rhyme, Now You're Gone, Baby Blue(I'm Missin' You), All the Whiskey in the World and Reason to Cry are worthy of an International Audience. Full of great hooks and memorable choruses, these songs could stand up against Nashville's best. Cameron's songs are well supported by covers Next In Line, Margaretaville and Some Memories Just Wont Die. I can highly recommend this album for lovers of that rich polished nashville sound - yes, we can do it here in Australia too."
